WRITER’S CORNER | DIPLOMACY, THE KEY TO WIN-WIN EQUATIONS

I have been, for long, feeling a certain hesitation in documenting my understanding of the world affairs, ’cause, the deep apprehension that I might come across as someone leaning towards a certain political belief or ideology or any particular nation has been stymieing my stepping into this arena.

But, the realization that I’m after all a global citizen and that my understanding as an observer can – and should – be clearly spelt out for my own clarity (and for you to read me on my worldview), has helped me outgrow this fear.

Therefore, here I am, with my maiden effort at articulating the insight I got from this article.

A nation having to be at its diplomatic best with others isn’t to be construed as suave by any means. It’s in fact an utmost necessity to maintaining cordial relations with everyone.

India is renowned (or notorious as some might read) for being extremely (or excessively) diplomatic and by not taking any judgmental stance on any global event.

Look a bit closely, the nation does enunciate on what it thinks could be the ideal scenario. Just that the suggested scenario does, many a time, sound utopian to many and therefore impractical.

Look a bit more closely, this ‘impractical’ stance hasn’t, in any way, diluted the respect the nation has been garnering from others for a singular reason. It follows the utopian dharma it advocates. Being cordial with everyone despite being aware that its standpoint could cause ruptures with some others. Being responsible in ironing out wrinkles wherever and whenever possible and to whatever extent possible. Being proactive in striking mutually beneficial equations. Being sensitive to the presence of big players in the scenario and yet moving its coins confidently without getting intimidated.

The number of accords India signed with Indonesia during the recent G20 summit is yet another classic act of its diplomatic expertise, given the fact that Indonesia is very close to China on a reciprocative note – for all the big-time investment China has made in Indonesia’s metal and mineral mining sector.

With so many undercurrents running all the time between nations for innumerably complex reasons, how could a nation forge constructive equations with another but for the diplomatic finesse it employs in its relationships? How could a nation aim for a win-win situation with another, without rubbing yet another the wrong way? How can a nation be good friends with two countries that are arch enemies of each other?

Extremely complex questions that have just one answer. Diplomacy.

India seems to be striking all the right notes on this score and I’m really happy for the nation.
