WRITER’S CORNER | HOW DO I QUANTIFY THE ‘DO YOUR BEST’ PART?

Do your very best. If you do, you don’t have to market yourself. Your work will market you. Word of mouth, as they call it.

But, there’s a certain naiveté here. For the work to market you, you need to put your work out there for people to see, in the first place. Marketing! Maybe a very soft form of marketing, but marketing nevertheless!

So, stop philosophizing! Accept it and do whatever you need to do!

And so, we put the promotion reel of the Chettinad Feature on Instagram to promote more downloads of our app Monument Universe. A sincerely produced product that, heart and soul! Great production values, absolutely authentic content and all of it! But, not many know about it.

The result of putting it out there was nothing short of wow… given the fact that we’ve just started.

But, here’s another twist.

There’s a chance for the ‘word of mouth’ to spread only if the work is good. So, do your very best.

Back to square one? Yes! And a trickier one at that!

How do I quantify the ‘doing my best’ part? It’s no exam. No one gives me 100%. No one can give me 100%. ‘Cause, by definition, a creative endeavor is an absolutely subjective take on a subject. It can be dealt with any which way. If ten people are handling it, each of them will present it in their own way. So, ten different dimensions. Which of them then would be correct? And, which wrong? Very elusive, that!

Now that the validation is confusingly camouflaged in a subjective reality, the hope – responsibility, to be precise – lies only with me, the writer. I wield a knife whose both sides are razor sharp… one creative and the other logical. Both would cut deep if I don’t handle them carefully. And both would get blunted if I don’t use them together… ’cause, one just can’t be sharp without the other. Either both are sharp or both are blunt. Twisted reality!

So, I better handle the dangerous craft carefully, do my very best and then, put my work out there. Confidently.

Word of mouth will, then, take over. Hopefully.
